Additional Park Information

Unicoi gets its name from the Unicoi Turnpike, a toll road that brought the first settlers into this area. It is said to mean “place of the white man,” “white man’s road,” “the new way” and “the new beginning.” There is a Cherokee word, “unega,” which means “white.”

Unicoi is 1,050 acres, and Unicoi Lake is 53 acres and is 52 feet deep.

Copperheads and Rattlesnakes are the only two venomous snakes in the area.

Black Bears are the only bears in Georgia. They eat nuts and berries. When there is not enough food in the woods for the bears, they will sometimes be seen. Please keep garbage and food scraps stored in air-tight containers.
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS.

You must have a fishing license to fish.

Swimming is allowed only in designated swimming areas within the boundary of the buoy line. There are no lifeguards on duty.

Hiking trails start at the upper parking lot (level 3). For trail lengths, please ask for a trail map at the Front Desk. No bikes allowed on the hiking trail. Please use the mountain bike trail.

For programs offered year-round, contact the Park Programming Department at ext. 549.

Anna Ruby Falls is a 3/4 mile hike from the Anna Ruby Falls parking area. It is a U.S. Forest Service Area and requires a separate pass.
